Cheyenne Botanic Gardens
Wyoming
The Cheyenne Botanic Gardens
located in Cheyenne, Wyoming is a high plains oasis
and Wyoming’s only public botanic garden. Providing
90% of the labor, senior, youth and handicapped volunteers
maintain the 8 acres of specialty gardens and additionally,
plant and maintain flowerbeds in Cheyenne’s park
system and many street right-of ways. The Cheyenne Botanic
Gardens is the only botanic garden in the nation that
provides as its primary purpose, social services for
seniors, youth and handicapped individuals along with
horticultural education and outreach, community enrichment
and beautification.
The tropical conservatory
is alive with plants and demonstrates sustainable solar
heating (100% solar heated) and solar electricity (50%
solar powered). The grounds feature xeriscapes, educational
wetlands, roses, herbs, historical landscapes and much
more. The project is an excellent example of a public
non-profit partnership as it is operated by the City
of Cheyenne along with a non-profit foundation, the
Friends of the Botanic Gardens. The foundation provides
funding for most new garden development and volunteer
support.
The Gardens are open 7 days
and week and admission is free to the public. The project
has been in existence since 1977 and has been recognized
by three U.S. presidents for its creative use of volunteers
and solar energy.
