La Paix Herb Farm
Alum Bridge
I would like to introduce
you to La Paix Herb Farm in Alum Bridge, West Virginia.
Twenty four years ago, I realized my dream of living
in a log cabin and farming organically when I bought
the old May-Kraus homestead. As a single mother with
two children, this was a great challenge and some questioned
my sanity.
Over the years, I have renovated the homeplace which
is comprised of an 1890 Victorian (Plantation I) farmhouse
in front and a two story log cabin (approximately 200
years old) in back. Outbuildings have been added including
a shop, small greenhouse, a patio for the essential
oil distillery, and in 2004, for the Second W.V. Lavender
Fair and more, twelve pavilions for booths and relaxation.
The black mesh domed roofs of the pavilions are recycled
satellite dishes. (see photo).
The gardens include the Feng Shui garden, a Silver Labyrinth,
extensive lavender and peppermint plantings, organically
grown fruits and vegetables, and numerous medicinal,
culinary and fragrant herbs. The 110 acres has many
paths through the woods with benches scattered for contemplation.
Workshops and tours are held during the Spring, Summer
and Fall months and the Third Lavender Fair is scheduled
for 2005. See www.lapaixherbfarm.com
