Magnolia
Plantation and its Gardens
Charleston, South Carolina
Listed in the National Register
of Historic Places, stately Magnolia Plantation built
in 1676, was the ancestral home of the Drayton Family.
It is one of the oldest and largest public gardens in
the United States, and consequently, a centerpiece of
Charleston history. It has an impressive 30 acres of
ornamental gardens.
Its fame started in the late 1860's, and since then
many experts still consider it "the most beautiful
garden in the world". Baedecker's Travel Guide
likened its springtime display, occurring towards the
end of March through April, to the majesty of the Grand
Canyon and Niagara Falls.
Horticulture highlights include a Biblical Garden featured
in Time Magazine, a Herb Garden, a Camellia Garden,
and the Barbados Tropical Garden. Miles of canoe, bike
and walking trails wind though Magnolia's many diverse
habitats. The Horticulture Maze, Topiary Garden and
the petting zoo are also a big hit with adults and children
alike!
Open 365 days a year, the plantation offers nearly 500
acres of gardens and grounds to explore. Rich in history,
floral beauty, and the wonders of nature, Magnolia has
earned a reputation as the South's Complete Plantation
Experience. Travel writer Charles Kuralt described it
as "My greatest pleasure." We hope and believe
your opinion will be similar.
