Roger Williams Park Botanical Gardens
Rhode Island

An Oasis in the City

Providence's Roger Williams Park is one of Rhode Island's most precious treasures. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Park, visited by 3.5 million people per year, was cited in 2000 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America's premier historic urban parks. To add to its accolades, the Park most recently received the 2001 "Centennial Medallion Award" presented by the American Society of Landscape Architects as a national landmark of outstanding landscape architecture. Today, the park embarks on a new horticultural journey that is sure to make history and claim national recognition.

The Friends of Roger Williams Park Botanical Gardens, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting the vital relationship between people and plants, horticulture and related fields, is presently planning for the construction of Botanical Gardens on twenty-six magnificent waterfront acres in Roger Williams Park. Linked by beautifully landscaped terraces, gardens and paths, this state-of-the art "green complex" will be the largest of its kind in the Northeast and according to design-build team, Gilbane Building Company, will be the most environmentally friendly facility in the state of Rhode Island!

The Botanical Gardens will be comprised of 2 conservatories, a guest pavilion, and numerous outdoor gardens. Often called the largest living classroom in Rhode Island, Roger Williams Park has always played a key role in environmental and natural history education for the state's school children. The Botanical Gardens will carry on the Park's highest standards of education by serving as a home for area plant enthusiasts, schools and universities, horticultural and nursery industries, business groups and garden clubs to teach and learn horticultural practices. The Botanical Gardens will continue to enhance the tradition of learning while having fun!

Phase One Groundbreaking for the Roger Williams Park Botanical Gardens is planned for spring 2003 and construction is scheduled for completion in fall 2004.
