Bend
is located east of the Cascade Mountain Range, dead
center in the state. It's high desert country, with
an annual precipitation of only 11 inches.
Our growing season is short, with the very real possibility
of a frost on any day of the year. With even summer
nights rarely getting above 40 degrees, most folks don't
bother with trying to grow such things as corn and tomatoes.
Our soil is coarse sand with a low nutrient value. In
spite of all this (or perhaps because of the challenges)
we have many beautiful landscapes.
