The Carl
Sandburg Home National Historic Site
Flat Rock, North Carolina
The Carl Sandburg Home National
Historic Site is a unit of the National
Park Service. Our park tells the story of Carl Sandburg,
and American
author, poet, and biographer of Abraham Lincoln. The
park maintains the
Sandburg estate along with several of its historic gardens.
We would like
to share them with you.
Left photo:
With grass pathways leading the visitor through a somewhat
Victorian design, Margaret’s Summer Garden is
a boundless plethora of color and variety from azaleas
to zinnias and everything in between: foxglove, bleeding
heart, coneflowers, cleome, ladyslippers, pinks, Canterbury
bells, phlox and ferns. That’s only the beginning!
The garden is maintained with the old-fashion varieties
of the 1950’s and 60’s.
Middle photo:
The Lily Garden, beside the Sandburg home, was a rainbow
of lilies framed with blue and white delphiniums, alyssum,
petunias and daisies. The garden is maintained today
with the same or very similar cultivars planted by Mrs.
Sandburg.
Right photo:
Historic outbuildings along original roadways and paths
are the interface between the Carl Sandburg home with
its lawn and gardens, and the 210 acres of forest and
woodland trails. This springhouse is where Mrs. Sandburg
made her goats milk cheese.
