Branch Brook
Park
Newark, New Jersey
by Jean LeBlanc
Urban oasis; celebration
of spring; natural retreat; place of history and civic
pride; a landscape masterpiece created by renowned Olmsted
designers – these are probably not the phrases
that come to mind when you think of Newark, New Jersey.
Branch Brook Park will change that, especially if you
visit this park in mid to late April, when thousands
of cherry trees burst into bloom.
Thanks to the generosity
and foresight of a wealthy donor, the annual cherry
blossom display in Branch Brook Park includes more trees
than the Washington, D.C., display. Winter-weary eyes
will also delight in the yellows of forsythia and daffodils.
Bring your binoculars as well, because this ribbon of
green through the city attracts numerous species of
birds.
A cherry blossom festival
is held each April, with events for runners, bikers,
and those who prefer a slower pace. The year I took
these photos, I was there on a weekday; it was as peaceful
as a stroll through the countryside. Obviously, the
park's beauty is there to enjoy year-round, but to see
the amazing display of cherry blossoms, you might want
to call ahead to the Essex County Department of Parks,
Recreation and Cultural Affairs at 973-268-3500.
