Tizer Botanic
Gardens & Arboretum
Elkhorn Mountains, Montana
Tizer Botanic Gardens & Arboretum is located just one mile off Interstate 15 about 18 miles south of Helena, the Capitol City of Montana. We are in the heart of the Elkhorn Mountains at 4,800 feet elevation with mountain peaks reaching over 9,000 feet just five miles away.
Our gardens include; hummingbird and butterfly gardens, a fun children's garden teeming with a fairy and gnome garden, native wildflower gardens, shade gardens, herb garden, a secret garden, creek-side perennial gardens, drought tolerant gardens and more.
We are members of the American Public Gardens Association. In 2007 we were chosen to be an official Demonstration and test Garden for the Denver Botanic Gardens and the Colorado State University "Plant Select" Program. Our plant collection includes several thousand varieties of perennials, shrubs and trees growing on our seven acre property. This is in despite of our severe winters that sometimes see -40 degrees below zero and summer temperatures of up to 105.
We have one of the largest collections of Clematis in the Rocky Mountain Region which contains over 125 varieties. We have tested over 600 roses representing about 120 varieties. Our collection also includes a unique variety of hundreds of trees, some of which are not normally found in Montana such as 20 types of maple trees.
We see about 15,000 visitors a season touring our over one-half mile of trails. People from over 15 countries, all 50 states and all of the provinces of Canada have toured our gardens.
National Hummingbird research people have banded some of the largest numbers of "Hummers" at our gardens than they have seen in other locations. In 2005 they banded over 700 in about 30 or 40 hours.
We hold events regularly such as; Fairy Festival (this one draws over 1,500 people), Scarecrow Festival, Things with Wings (Hummingbirds, Butterflies and other Birds and Bugs) Festival, and more. Guests can participate in High Tea on scheduled dates, Shakespeare in the garden, Blue Grass Fridays and a host of other events posted on our website over the season.
