Mississippi Gardens - An Historical Vignette

More than a century ago, the gardens of Natchez in Mississippi were a highlight of steamboat traffic on the Mississippi river. No trip on the river was complete without a stop at Natchez renowned for their magnificent subtropical gardens.

After the War Between the States, slaves were freed, and lands sold, and many of these old gardens were neglected and were soon over-taken by thick and impenetrable vegetation.

A portion of some of the most noted gardens of Old Natchez still exists. Many of these century-old mansions which once occupied the most beautiful stops on the Mississippi River, now sit proudly restored, their antebellum architecture, antiques, and expansive gardens filled once again with with glorious colored bulbs, dogwoods, azaleas, and live oak trees draped with Spanish moss.
