Minnesota Gardens - An Historical Vignette

The apple named "Wealthy" originated in Excelsior, Minnesota in 1860. A hardy fruit, it is bright red with very white flesh and the faint smell of strawberries.

Minneapolis's Rose Garden, located in Lyndale Park on the shore of Lake Harriet is the second oldest public garden in the nation. It was built by Theodore Wirth, who also designed one of the first municipal rose garden in Hartford, Connecticut.

In lush Noerenberg Gardens of Orono near the shore of Minnetonka, the lake served as the background for the summer houses of some of the country's most wealthy citizens. A stunning Queen Anne-style mansion was built by Frederick Noerenberg, who went on to establish a full-time residence here in the late 19th century. Although, due to the terms of his will, his mansion was torn down after the death of his last heir, the magnificent 73 acres of gardens with their unusual combinations of colors and textures are as beautiful today as they were when the family was in residence.
