This is my garden in suburban
Maryland, close to Washington, DC. I began gardening
only about six years ago, quite by accident. Since then,
I have become a landscape designer, garden writer and
photographer, and avid experimenter with all kinds of
plants on my quarter-acre suburban lot. I have sun,
shade, and everything in between. I also have a huge
hill in front, a framework of mature azaleas in the
back yard, and two statuesque trees - an American beech
and a flowering crabapple -- that frame the view to
the street.
As a recovered lawyer,
I treasure the opportunity gardening gives me to exercise
my right brain and explore my creative side. I'm always
moving my plants around to see if they might look better
or thrive more happily in a different spot. And when
a neighbor's falling oak tree took out a cherished dogwood
last year, I made the best of the situation by redesigning
the space and planting some more sun-loving shrubs and
perennials.
