Maine Coast

Gardening on the Maine Coast is a challenge! Heavy clay soil, alternating with what amounts to beach sand, acidic conditions, short growing season, vastly fluctuating temperatures in any given week - it's great!

You quickly (or not so quickly) learn what will and will not grow in your yard. And there is no rule of thumb! Trial and error - that's the ticket. Thank heaven for rhododendrons and hydrangeas! And lilacs of course - one of the perks of living in a colder state is the lilacs.

I wouldn't live anywhere else - and the changing seasons in the garden alone, is enough to make it worthwhile. Spring, summer, autumn - even the ice and snowcover of winter - is all incredibly beautiful here in Maine. You just have to learn to plant what works!
