Kentucky Gardens - An Historical Vignette

When Robert Alexander came to Philadelphia with his friend Benjamin Franklin, he made a trip to the new state of Kentucky and soon after, won over by its charms, decided to live there.

Alexander became so engrossed with his beautiful estate, Walnut Hall, just outside Lexington, Kentucky that he declined to go back to Scotland to claim a lordly title.

Walnut Hall was said by Lord Derby to be "as beautiful as any place in England." With its 4,000 acres divided off into parks and woodlands according to English ideals, it had some of the richest soil in the world and an unmatched idyllic beauty.
