Kansas State
University Gardens
Kansas
The KSU Gardens is located
on the campus of Kansas State University. When completed,
there will be 19-acres of horticulture display gardens.
The gardens are designed to show hardscape and tested
ornamental plant material in different aesthetic settings.
The site is being developed and maintained by the Department
of Horticulture, Forestry and Recreation Resources in
the College of Agriculture. The Gardens Project will
allow students to be actively involved in the ongoing
development, maintenance, and operation of this world
class garden. In addition to the hands-on learning experience
for students in the horticulture program, students from
other programs -- such as engineering; landscape architecture;
apparel, textiles, and interior design; and the art
program will all play a part in the Gardens project.
In October of 2001, the John E. Tillotson Sr. Visitor
Center Garden (Phase I) was completed. Special garden
areas included are the Cottage Garden, Butterfly Garden,
Adaptive/Native Plant Garden, and the Rose Garden. In
addition, the KSU Gardens have several Collection Gardens
such as the Daylily Collection, Iris Collection, and
Rose Collection, all of which have hundreds of different
varieties on display. Another focal point in the Visitor
Center Garden is the Historic Conservatory, built in
1907.
The Conservatory houses three different regions of tropical
and arid plants, and is the location of the Butterfly
Exhibit. Throughout, the gardens are complimented by
structures, peaceful fountains, and beautiful sculptures.
The plans for Phase II and Phase III of the gardens
will include more specialty gardens (Prairie Garden,
Alumni Garden, Sensory Garden, Children's Garden, Poisonous
Plants Garden), collection gardens (Hosta, Peony), sculptures,
and other special features including lakes, fountains,
and waterfalls.
