Denver Urban
Gardens (DUG)
Denver
We
create community gardens to unite diverse communities
and teach self-sufficiency through the commonality of
gardening.
In existence for over 17
years, DUG seeks to strengthen underserved urban neighborhoods
through the creation of gardens and small parks. Our
mission has been to support transformation of vacant,
derelict lots into vital community open spaces. These
public gardens have become a focus for producing food,
hosting neighborhood activities and engaging participants
in education programs serving over 25,000 individuals
annually.
In 1997, the Community
Farm was initiated, extending DUG projects beyond vegetable
gardens to ecosystem and agricultural education. A training
program began in 1998 focused toward hands-on horticulture
for under-served and disadvantaged youth and adults.
As of 2002, DUG is responsible for construction and
education programs serving nearly 70 gardens, the Community
Farm, 9 park or “habitat classrooms” sites
and collaborates with 35 local youth and family programs
annually.
