Arkansas Gardens - An Historical Vignette

Many of the first settlers to Arkansas came originally to be missionaries and doctors. This new territory became an attractive home to many partly because of its diversity of climate, altitude, and soil. It was a mix between a north-temperate climate adapted to a wide variety of crops, mountainous regions in the northwestern parts of the state and subtropical in the southeastern parts.

Many, if not most, of the earliest apple trees in north Arkansas originated from Johnny Appleseed (Jonathan Chapman). It was in 1806 that Johnny made his first visit to this area and scattered his apple seeds to create the first orchards in this territory. From the numerous new seedling varieties of apples grown, many have assumed national importance.
