Southern Environmental Center
Birmingham-Southern College, Alabama

Established in 1996 on Birmingham-Southern College's campus, the EcoScape is a wonderful outdoor classroom that utilizes local art work to illustrate organic gardening practices and provides a nuts-and-bolts overview for schools and communities interested in creating outdoor learning sites or "community gardens."

Visitors can stroll through a Northern Wildflower Garden, touch and sample edible plants and flowers and pass by huge Preying Mantis and Spider sculptures on the way to the EcoScape's Wetland and Tree Trails.

The EcoScape also provides a unique focus on water issues, ranging from
Xeriscaping to urban runoff pollution. The EcoScape has been featured in Southern Living and Sculpture magazines, and you can take a virtual tour of the gardens on the web at www.bsc.edu/sec.
